My work centers gender roles as something that can be constructed and performed. Through costume and disguise, I birth a new identity with each photograph. Each character that I create references the absurd nuances of my own and others’ gender identities; they exist as fictional caricatures created through portraiture. As a subject, portraiture intrigues me because of its ties to persona and status. The substance within the image is the identity of the individual and photographing that identity immortalizes and empowers it. In my work I urge the viewer to step outside of their own world and notice the absurdities in how we perceive masculinity and femininity or rather redefine it for themselves.
